Continue reading to discover some of the signs of domestic abuse.

Signs of Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse can be defined as a pattern of behaviors used by one individual to maintain control and power over another in an intimate relationship. An intimate relationship can include any household or family members and romantic partners. You can still have an intimate partner relationship if you don’t live with the abuser, and the relationship doesn’t have to be sexual. It may not be easy to identify domestic abuse at first. Some relationships may be obviously abusive from the beginning, but domestic abuse often starts subtly and worsens over time. Some of the signs of domestic abuse include:

  • Physical Abuse – This can include hitting, shoving, grabbing, etc. Physical abuse can also include denying a partner proper medical care or forcing substance use upon them.
  • Emotional Abuse – Undermining a person’s sense of self-esteem is abusive. Emotional abuse can include name-calling, constant criticism, belittling, or damaging one’s relationship with their child.
  • Psychological Abuse – Psychological abuse can include intimidation, threats to harm themselves, their partner, or their family and friends, destruction of property, and forced isolation.
  • Sexual Abuse – Attempting to coerce or coercing sexual contact without consent. This type of abuse can include marital rape, sexual attacks on the body, or treating one in a sexually degrading manner.
  • Economic abuse – Economic abuse can involve restraining or controlling an individual’s ability to use or maintain economic resources.

Maltreatment in any relationship can be considered domestic abuse and therefore affect anyone, including men, women, children, teenagers, and married or unmarried individuals, and can happen in same-sex or heterosexual relationships. These relationships will always involve a power imbalance and control. Since the nature of domestic abuse is so traumatic, many victims feel uncomfortable discussing the abuse they have faced. However, knowledge of any abuse is essential for an attorney to have to protect their client better.
